This is the third year that the mini rubber ducks will be sold and then raced on Carnival night in the Harbour. Each year the amount on sale has risen to keep pace with the demand from Islanders keen to support this popular fundraising fixture on the Guernsey summer calendar. With a thousand ducks more to sell this year, event organisers, the Guernsey Round Table, will be hosting more stands to sell the ducks in run up to the Harbour Carnival.
Shaun Gourley from the Guernsey Round Table said: ‘The mini ducks will be available for purchase on the three Saturdays before the Harbour Carnival as well as the day before. On Saturday 20 July and 3 August, we’ll be outside Town Church, on the High Street near Next and also at Le Friquet Garden Centre. On Saturday 27 July we’ll be at all these places again, as well as the Marks & Spencer stores in L’islet and St Martins. Finally, we’ll be outside Town Church and on the High Street on Thursday 8 August – the day before Harbour Carnival.
‘Please come along and purchase a duck, the proceeds of which will go to local charities and the Guernsey Sea Cadets who are this year’s main beneficiary. You’ll also be in with a chance of winning a fabulous prize.’
Once purchased, mini ducks can be decorated or simply named. They should then be brought along on the night (by 5pm) where they will be entered into the race with other mini ducks. The winning duck will be the one that travels the furthest in five minutes, and the prize winner will receive four return tickets to Jersey, courtesy of Travel Solutions.
Andy Creber from the RBC Wealth Management’s Guernsey Leadership Team: ‘As the sponsors of the event, our staff really get behind the Harbour Carnival each year and we’ll be doing our bit by selling ducks to our staff at our Canada Court offices. With such a fabulous prize on offer this year, I am sure the ducks will be flying off the shelves.’
