The town centre will be awash with mini rubber ducks next week as 4,000 of them go on sale in the run up to next month’s Harbour Carnival (Friday 29 August).

Each mini duck will be sold for £2 and then raced along the Harbour, starting from the Crown pier, during Harbour Carnival.

Mike Ozanne of Guernsey Round Table, organisers of Harbour Carnival said: ‘The mini duck race is one of the highlights of Harbour Carnival – it is quite a spectacle watching the sea of yellow that the mini ducks create after being dropped into the harbour waters, followed by eager anticipation to see which one makes it first over the finishing line!

‘We’ll be selling the ducks in town (outside Next) on Saturday 9, 13 and 26 August, and all the proceeds will go to our main beneficiary this year – the Guernsey Sports Commission and their Street Sports Programme in particular.

Lisa Barnett from RBC Wealth Management, sponsors of the Harbour Carnival for the last six years said: ‘Once again we’ll be going quackers for the mini ducks and selling them to staff at our Canada Court offices. Harbour Carnival is a wonderful family event, and we are proud to support and promote the efforts of the Roundtable. We hope that everyone will help contribute to our fundraising efforts by racing a rubber duck!’

All purchased mini ducks can be decorated as elaborately or simply as participants like. They should then be brought to the end of the Crown pier on 29 August, by 5.30pm, where they will be entered into the race. The winning duck will be the duck that travels the furthest in five minutes and the prize winner will receive four return flights to Jersey courtesy of Travel Solutions.
